Loneliness is the pain of being alone, and
Solitude expresses the glory of being alone
- Paul Tillich
I was raised in a joint family and when I was not with them I was with my friends. This continued even till my late 20’s. I never knew the meaning of spending time alone, I always equated that to being lonely. Therefore, I could never understand when someone spoke about watching a movie alone or going on a solo trip. It was a concept that was alien to me.
What I have realized with time is that you can feel lonely while being surrounded by people. If I don’t know and love myself, I would not be able to be truly happy.
Fast forward to now… I love "me time" as much as spending time with people. I do everything from reading a novel, sketching, going on a long walk, trips and I thoroughly enjoy it. This was a gradual change that came after talking to people, introspecting, paying attention to my needs, reading, and finally practising.
Research proves that:
Solitude helps you get to know yourself
It boosts creativity and productivity
It improves psychological well-being
We reap the above benefits provided, solitude is by choice.
“Self-love is not selfish; you cannot truly love another until you know how to love yourself ”
Therefore, spend some time with your thoughts. The best investment is investing in your well-being.
Do that today :)
Remember, it’s Beautiful being YOU!
